Sunday, September 26, 2010, saw the annual NSHA/MHA event highlighting all things equine, at the Muttontown Preserve. Free pony/horse rides were offered to the attendees (adult or child) by MHA member LAKEWOOD STABLES of West Hempstead.
The day is a FREE day for all-lunch, pony rides, exhibitions, parking etc-and it is sponsored foremost by CHESTNUT VALE/AGWAY of Hicksville. Chestnut Vale has been the sole sponsor since the event's inception many years ago. This year, due to rising costs, ALEX NICHOLS HORSE TRANSPORT of Oceanside and RUFFIAN EQUINE MEDICAL CENTER of Elmont, have provided sponsorships.
RALPH's ICES of Oyster Bay and SARIVOLE ORGANIC BAKERY of Brooklyn, donated to the event and also provided dessert options during the day long event. Apples and cider were donated by JERICHO CIDER MILL of East Norwich and potato chips were provided by NORTH FORK POTATO CHIPS.
Susan Harvey once again provided the tables and chairs for dining pleasure and the volunteers from MHA and NSHA manned the grounds during the day, cleaned up afterwards and set up the day before. In addition of course to the prior planning.
LONG ISLAND POWER EQUIPMENT of Hicksville donated a Toro Power Snow Shovel (won by Vivian), AGWAY donated two gift baskets (won by Gina and Maria) and the 50/50 raffle was won by Bobbi.
On hand for safety and education were members from the East Norwich Volunteer Fire Dept EMS squad and Nassau County Mounted Police.
The exhibitions began at noon, with the national anthem and flag presentation by the Nassau County Mounted Police and the color guard of the Rough Riders of NSHA. Then the Spirit of America, IHA's drill team provided their superb drill work, the Cowboy Mounted Shooting team wowed the audience with balloon shooting from horseback, the Rough Riders demonstrated saber skill by halving cabbages mounted on poles and the Smithtown Hunt presented their hounds and hunting techniques. Calmer events showcased the horse as a therapeutic partner in the My Shine Therapeutic Riding Program, natural horsemanship by the New York Natural Equestrians and carriage driving by Karolina Zemecka of Regal Carriage. Exhibitors are all local folk from Long Island, volunteering their time and horses because they want people to enjoy horses as much as they do!
Vendor were also present, selling jewelry and photography and providing information about various horse groups and animal safety groups available on Long Island.
