We are a small 501c3 organization working in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay, New York municipal shelter. We provide foster care when necessary but mostly try to promote the animals while they still have time in the shelter. We promote the improvements of the public shelter with volunteer services and community donations. We also actively raise funds through our community sponsored events and newsletters.
News!!! Mixed Breeds In Need has finally been approved by the Town Of Oyster Bay to establish a rescue program working at the shelter facility in Syosset. Initially we have been given permission to have our two volunteer dog trainers, Mindy Mylett and Kathy Dattoma, work with the dogs residing at the shelter for 10 -20 hours per week. This will help to socialize them and make them more adoptable. With the funds we save by not having to do our own foster care we can now plan to physically improve the at-present very small cat facility. We are very pleased to be on track with our original goals of improving the public facilitiy itself thus increasing animal adoption directly from the shelter. We will continue to work in this direction to take more of the burden off the private rescue organizations working in our area. The town of Oyster Bay Shelter will also be receiving a mobile spay/neuter clinic any day now and will do in-house spay/neuter in the future. We are so pleased with the very positive response we have received from our town and the community we live in. It is a validation that change can occur if the intention is set and determination is strong.
Mixed Breeds In Need started its existence as a "watchdog" organization.
Anita Von Himmel and Marsha Greenman accidently came upon their local municipal shelter. Anita often ran in the nearby state park. One day she came upon a small abandoned dog. She turned it in to the local shelter hoping she was just lost. Together they found a good home for the dog. Mixed Breeds In Need was born!
Since then we have placed over one hundred dogs and cats in homes with only a very small budget, two people working every day, good community support and much fortitude. We are in favor of working with the existing municipal shelters and trying to help them make improvements. We write letters to the towns and villages in our area to promote beneficial changes for shelter animals. We publish a semi-annual newsletter and host a community dog training event in the Spring to help educate people.
Mixed Breeds In Need:
Provides a voice for animal welfare in our community and municipal shelter and inspires active participation within the community towards this effort
Encourages pet adoption from local municipal shelters
Educates the public to develop a "guardianship mentality" as opposed to the concept of pet ownership
Reduces the serious problem of pet overpopulation by encouraging spay and neuter programs and public education
Accomplishments and Continued Goals for MBIN:
Over the course of four years Mixed Breeds In Need has helped to improve its local shelter facilities.
We installed a community painted mural in the lobby of the Town of Oyster Bay Shelter.
We donated cat playpens to help expand the adoption viewing space for adoptable cats into the lobby of the Town of Oyster Bay Shelter.
We donated flowers for the planting beds outside the shelter to improve the shelter's physical appearance.
With our encouragement the town shelter has improved its facilities with a free-play area and purchased agility training equipment
We have established a Trap-Neuter Release Program for feral cats and are starting an in house spay/neuter clinic with local veterinary volunteers, some of whom have been solicited by Mixed Breeds In Need.
With our weekly visits we have been able to identify animals that are not being adopted through the shelter system. Mixed Breeds In Need is taking over the responsibility of getting these animals adopted through our foster care and advertising program. We also removed many animals that were sick providing medicine and additional veterinay care for them with our own funds. We are continuing to act as a voice for the animals.
