ABOUT MHA
Muttontown Horsemen’s Association was formed in 1982 when local equestrians banded together to protect local trails, promote the creation of trails when large parcels of land were coming up for subdivision, and promote horses, horse education, and best practices to the public. Over the years, membership has grown and our activities have expanded to meet the needs of both riders and non-riders. An important aspect of our mission is trail maintenance. MHA coordinates the physical work with Nassau County, the Village of Muttontown, the Village of Brookville, Nassau County Soil and Water, and other trail user groups like Old Westbury Horsemen’s Foundation, L.I. Greenbelt Association, L.I. Cross Country Ski Club, L.I. Orienteering Club, and Boy Scouts of America to keep the inter-community trail system open.Some of our achievements are: recognition as the official “Adopt a Park” group for the Muttontown Preserve, praise from Senator Carl Marcellino as an organization responsible for maintaining the “unique characteristics of the Muttontown Community” and former County Executives Tom Gulotta and Tom Souzzi for our “level of concern that warrants formal acknowledgment” and “a responsive role in the development of positive and beneficial activity in our community”. In 2007 MHA worked with Nassau Land Trust and the former owner of Old Mill Farm in Jericho, to preserve the farm through Nassau County’s Environmental Bond Act Program. In 2008, after passing a review by the environmental Bond Act Committee, the farm was purchased by Nassau County with funds from the Bond Act. The farm is currently open and operated as Nassau Equestrian Center.In 2014, MHA worked with Brookville homeowners wishing to build a pool in the backyard of their home which also possessed an equestrian trail crossing through their property. MHA brokered a plan to preserve trail access with the cooperation of the landowner, the support of the Village of Brookville officials, and the assistance of the Old Westbury Horsemen’s Association. Because of such open communication and cooperation, riders today are able to enjoy the main connector trail that links the Muttontown, SUNY Old Westbury, and Old Westbury Village trail systems. In addition to our open monthly board meetings, seasonal trail cleanups, and our Annual Equestrian Festival (showcasing many people from the Long Island horse community), MHA sponsors other social, educational, and fundraising activities as well. We hold Equestrian Rescue seminars for the local fire and police departments. Muttontown Horsemen’s Association needs your help in continuing our work.
